View Full Version : What would it take to bend 3/8" plate?

no wider then 6", no bigger bend then 45 degrees. Just wondering if I should even bother trying to make something out of angle to put a bend in some 3/8" plate. Think making a diff cover and then youll have an idea of what I want to do. If I can make an attachment for my 20 ton press to bend plate then I would rather spend time welding that up then cutting forty pieces to make a diff cover. 3/8" would be the most I would ever want to bend. Normal duty would be 3/16"-1/4"

Jason described to me at one point how he turned his press into a press brake but Ive forgotten. Its possible though, you'll have to ask him.

Your 20 ton can do it but 6" is going to be tough, get a cheater bar for the pump handle... I bend 3/8" in mine usually about 4-5" wide but have done 6". It's scary but works, just stand clear. Also it helps to weld the press together since all the bolted joints are wobbly.
I made something similar to this but I'd recommend just buying it:

Jason, i have a 40 ton air over hydraulic press at work so if you need some help let me know. Just make some sort of jig and bring it down here and we'll get it bent. :thumb:

Thanks for the offer, but I was hoping to add to my pile of home made tools so that I dont have to travel to get something done. I mean Im just trying to justify a work around so that I dont have to cut it and reweld it.

You will still be adding to your tools, but if your press won't bend it mine definately will. :thumb:

Well got around to finally making something. Its not finished yet. I want to add some bracing on the top, kinda like an A so that it supports the ends and not just the center. Also like to add something so that it is centered. Prob wont use it for anything bigger then 1/4".

Tested it out. 1/4" Not any harder then pressing many things in and out.

As you can see in your test piece the 90 degree became 85 degree, you will need to bend to 93-94 degrees to compensate......of course then we can you need to compensate for something.....
