Im trying to avoid doing a Hydro assist or Hydraulic steering set up on the blazer, and thought maybe a simpler approach might get me by.

Has anyone found a smaller diameter P/S pump pulley for a serpentine belt set up ? My thoughts are to simply bring up the pressure when idling or at slower speeds. This is the only time my steering isn't working well enough.

.......your thoughts................ ?

Duno...just the first thing that came to mind was more heat...dunno if the pump would overheat when cruzin down the hwy at top speed..?
Maybe a cooler would be inorder....
just thinkin outloaud here.....

Its already got a power steering cooler, the late trucks came with one from the factory, and weather or not it was overdriven depends on the size of the pulley. Im not looking for a drastic change, but it will depend on what i can find.

No one else has ever heard/thought of doing this before ?

I have seen it done the other way to underdrive it to save power, and seems it didn't affect the performance much so i don't know how much gain you will get by overdriving it.
In theory it will be an improvement, and if your steering is better at let's say 1100 RPM we can do the math on how much to overdrive it.
I don't think heat will be an issue here you don't let the engine scream on the highway do you?

Yes, it is better at around 1100 or so, thats why im thinking of either installing a high idle mechanism, or overdriving the pump to get me the extra pressure i need.

and at most it might see 4,000 and only for a short burst at the beach while im whipping Ryan's ass up a dune :flipoff2:

seen it done on tv for this reason but have no clue if it would work. It should. Let us know if it works. Maybe it could be a cheap fix for some limited situations. Ya get what you pay for though. I thought summit has those in serpentine.

Yes, the only pulleys i have found so far are from Summit. They are $60-$75 and all will have to be bored out to fit the .750" pump shaft size.

I want to figure something out before moab. I will keep you all informed.

Okay,........ Here is the progress i made with my smaller pulley idea.

A few days before Moab i found a smaller pulley pressed right onto my pump without any modification. It was approx. 3/4" smaller in diameter.

2,000 miles later everthing is still working properly, and i have not had the lack of power assist that i would occasionally get before the swap.

So far so good.

Yes. The part number for the pulley is at home and i can get that later today.

Basically its a March Performance pulley. I bought it from Summit racing cost was $67.88. Part # MCH-624

You will need a puller to get the old one off, and an installer to press this one back on. Replacement can be done on the truck, and a new belt will need to be fitted. The belt is used was Carquest part # K060935Let me know if you have any other questions.

Whats the reason for not wanting hydro assists? Sure takes some undue stress off the frame.

*Cost
*Necessity
*I dont want overly sensitive steering on the highway

.......plus this was much simpler/easier
