View Full Version : Tday Wheeling Trip to hollister!

Well This is the weekend Im shooting for to get my rig done and out to play with it. Ive wheeled it once this year and most of that trip was spent putting it back together. I NEED to get out and play. Even more so after missing Moab.

I also found out that my family is leaving my for disney world. :( Since they didnt invite me Im doing my own thing. I was orginally thinking a day trip, then after talking to Jerry last night I think some camping is in order. It might be a PB&J and top ramin camping trip but it will be a good time either way.

So who else wants to wheel? Camp? 1 night or 2 or more? Holister? Bako wheeling spot?

I believe I'll be at the hammers but it's not set in stone yet.

Hammers would be a thought. Altho I would like to test the rig before I travel that far. Whos all going to be at the hammers for tday?

I'm a maybe.

Where?

Hammers looks like 8 hours, 400 miles, 2.5 tanks, $130 each way in gas. That would deffently make it a pbj and top ramin trip. If someone wants to ride shotgun and help with the gas I could be more down to head down that way.

If you can put up w/ me for that long, and depending on the timeframe, I'd be down.

Possibly Hollister or Hammers. I don't know my schedule yet, meaning I may get the idea to drive and pick up those shelves in Concord, making Hollister an easier trip. I won't be taking the Chevy to Hollister and I don't think it can do much at the Hammers so I'll likely be there visiting.

jays68yak
10-16-2006, 03:35 PM
After sleeping on it I think hollister would be best for me. I need to get a trip or two under the rigs belt so to speak before I head too far. But I would still be willing to head to the bako spot. :)

I was having nightmares of rolling my rig at the hammers so maybe thats a sign.

I’m a maybe for a turkey day trip….but leaning towards a “NO”.

Biggest thing looming over my decision is the fact that we may be moving that weekend. We went and looked at a house yesterday that IS SWEET (3BR/2BA, RV parking, POOL, 2 car garage, dog run, remodeled kitchen, etc.). But, we wouldn’t be able to move into till thanksgiving. So…that would kinda make it hard to go wheeling. I’ll know if we got the house by the end of this week. But, if possible I’d like to make it down for a day run to Hollister. Much farther than that I doubt I’ll be able to make it. Although there is a small chance I’d be at my Dad’s for turkey day….and if that’s the case I’m going to do my best to meet Jason at the hammers.

More to follow…..

That’s not true…actually, I’ve got several brain cells left. Unfortunately, the ones that aren’t retarded and pushing themselves around my medulla oblongata or the frontal lobe of my brain in little tiny wheelchairs are drunk and arguing amongst themselves…..which leads to total chaos in my head and me acting the way that I do.

That would be the pre-surgery. It could be discovered that in fact you need a whole new front axle assembly and that you can not use any part of the current setup. In that case I will be happy to take it all off your hands this evening. :flipoff2:

Naw…I’ve got two good diagnoses on it already. And that’s not even including my own. :flipoff2:

I’ll get it back up and running…question is….when? Hopefully I can get it fixed before the end of the year. I want to do some snow wheeling in December and also some new years wheeling!!!

I’ll call you when I’m on my way home Jason. But I think tonight should be fine for you to swing by.

Did ya pop the diff cover yet? :uh oh: :p

barbastard
10-17-2006, 12:43 AM
I pulled the cover yesterday and checked the R&P and locker out. The good thing is from as far as I can tell the spider gears look to be just fine. However, I noticed two bad things. The wires coming off the locker and coming out of the diff housing itself somehow got sucked into the R&P gear and have been mangled up. This is odd, because Saturday afternoon while running Pritchett canyon was when we first noticed the locker problem. At lunch time we took a multimeter and tested ALL wires and connections for the locker. Electronically everything was fine AND the wires were still coming out of the housing. So, sometime between mid-day Saturday and end of day Sunday when we finished up running gold bar rim the wires were sucked into the housing. I can only figure that something inside the diff grabbed a hold of them as it’s not really possible for the wires to just accidentally become unplugged from the weatherpak plug and then “fall” into the housing. The second bad thing is that it appears that on the drivers side of the R&P setup there is a round “sleeve” (for lack of a better term) that is next to the bearing caps. At the top and bottom of this “sleeve” it appears as if the metal “peeled” back and has been damaged. Take a look at the attached pics to see what I mean. I didn’t find any metal chunks in the diff and other than a little water in the GL it looked to be ok.

After talking with Trevor and showing him the pics he thinks I simply spun out a shim and the shim grabbed the wires. Everything turns fine, spider gears look fine, R&P look fine it’s just this one piece that looked like it rotated and pulled the wires in. I’m going to bring it up to his shop in the next 4-8 weeks (when I have time) and get it fixed and then do a little wheeling up in Grass Valley/Auburn.

It should all be good. I’ll post up (eventually) when I get it fixed and what the final prognosis was.

Im down if I get the truck to cooperate. This weekend is bad for me, but most others can be planned around a planned trip.

What started as a bearing last evening quickly turned into a new AC compressor, Ive now spent as much on replacing accesories on the motor as I did buying the 4l80e and the truck still hasn't gotten out of Cupertino.

But, unfortunately on this one it isn't in the cards. I've had ZERO time to spend on my rig since I got back from Moab so it's still jacked up. I'm exhausted because I've been working 60+hours a week since I got back from Moab. Finally home. Just pulled up. Great time as always. Oh and My truck no breakie. Well atleast not till it got on the trailer. Then it was brought to my attention that the frame is cracked around the steering box. :uh oh: Whatever it didnt stop me all weekend so that is nice. One of the fans decided that it didnt want to work anymore and shorted itself out. It was the one that I cut into last year with my water pump, so not surprised about that at all. Even with one fan the truck ran at 180-190 the whole weekend. It would be on the warmer side driving to the trails. Running trap today I think I was averaging about 160 cuz we were stopping so much waiting for others to catch up. We ran tank twice. First time I had to winch in 2 spots. Second time through, once. The spot were I would of had to winch again I just bonzied it. :banger: Overall I am way happy with the rig. So much so I was letting Kevin drive it on part of tank and on another trail. There are a few things I need to address, most of which is body trimming.

My batteries where crap and I forget to buy more so I only got a few pics. Cant wait for the video from CCR.

damn jay truck looks good, wish i could have made it out there, but family is what it is and i ended up baby sitting the entire weekend when i wasn't working.

some idiot decided to make a u-turn on a two lane highway and pulled out in front of my brother in-laws motor cycle(not Darryl, the other one Scott). it ended up he flipped the small SUV and it caused multiple breaks to his lower left leg(and he's missing pieces, their in a baggie dead, gonna have to do bone grafts). also broke his oposite shoulder bone fron the impact of his helmet bouncing back off of the passanger side door. so he's hurting in opposite corners. plus side is i get to spend time with my niece and nefew. i even took em back up to santa rosa to see thier dad yesterday.
