Yep. Yanked out the tpi motor for no good reason. :D

Unless you consider a 2004 GenIII LQ9 6.0L LS1 Engine a good reason. Project secret squirrel...
Bone Stock: 345HP 385FTLBS. Computer has been "mailorder performance tuned"... Long tube headers and dyno tuning to come...

:banger:

No driving road tests as of yet.. Need to finish some stuff..
But it runs... And it runs longer than 2 seconds now.
Had to send out the computer and get it reflashed again to remove the anti theft system.
Had this of been a 2002 engine or earlier, I would have been running tank trap at hollister last weekend with you guys. 2003 and up has Serial VATS which is more complex, then just finding the right resistor to trick the computer.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Kevin, K5tpi.. who made this possible. This project wouldn't have been found, started, or finished without his help. :2thumbs:

yah whatever '96 man. :flipoff2:
like i said 02 up you can't trick the computer by hooking up one of the 15 resistors inline of the ignition circuit.... 3 minute lockout X 15 resistors= I could have had the thing running in an hour if i made all the correct resistances.
OR building a Vats bypass module:
PasskeyI='93-'98 i think.. 5 volt reference, 30HZ 50% duty cycle signal square wave pulse
PasskeyII='99-'02.. 5 volt reference 50HZ 50% duty cycle square wave pulse
'03 up Serial Vats= PCM communicates with BCM. Engine starts, PCM asks BCM for vin# and other info... No communication, it kills the injector pulse within 2-3 seconds. Only way around it is to have the computer flashed and turn off all VATS and BCM injector pulse enable signal.
I towed my truck up to Synergy motorsports in Freemont and he played around with hptuners hooked up on a laptop, disabled all VATS, and the program was not current enough to disable '03 up serial vats. They didn't even know what was going on. :flipoff2:

My computer was supposed to have this all disabled and ready to rock... but it had the wrong program. Jared at current performance overnighted it back to him on tuesday, fixed the program and overnighted it back to me on thursday, I recieved it this evening. :2thumbs: :pimp2:

Mike, i think he said after buying the engine and having the ECM flashed and wiring reworked about 2k.

Nah man i wish...

$1K for just the motor with the harness.. I happened to find the computer as well digging through a pile of em where i bought it.
K5tpi and i stumbled upon this junkyard treasure the last weekend in july i believe right after blazerfest... Kevin spotted the big aluminum head on top of the iron block and yelled at me to come over and look at this wrecked 2004 Isuzu NPR cabover box delievery truck.. .. I saw the coil packs on top of the valve covers and instantly knew what it was. The 6.0L stamped into the back of the block confirmed it. We found the air filter box and it said 2004 model year and knew we struck gold if the motor was still good..
When we inquired about the engine they threw out the price of $1200... So i thought about it, and came to the conclusion that if my current tpi 350 blew up tommorow.. I'd probably be $3k deep in a 383 rebuild to get it going again.. Kevin also threatened to kick my arse if i didn't go back and get the motor.
We went back the next day and i whipped out $1K cash.

It was wrecked hard on the drivers side. The jaws of life took out the drivers half of the cab of the box truck, and the gauges were gone so no telling how many miles were on the engine.. Being 2004 + the guy said it was at the yard for like 6 months= low miles! Kevin and i spent most of the day at the junkyard tracing wires in attempt to fire the engine. We got a battery and some starter fluid.. We got it cranking over but no spark..
In the middle of trying to get this engine running Kevin started prying out the tape from the radio to see what they were listening to at the time of this crash... It was some mexican music tape... so we realized that when i got this 6.0L running in my K5 it would be in memory of Jose Guillermo Rodrigez or whatever the guys name was who was driving this truck.. and i might have a ghost riding shotgun with me now wherever that motor goes..
The engine sounded real healthy when it was just cranking over so after hours of attempts at getting spark, we said screw it, I'll take it. Carefully removed the damaged harness and all the lines hooked up to the engine..
When we removed the air tube, the throttle blade was Halfway open still!
Did the throttle stick on the guy who was driving this? Did he fall asleep? Did the impact make his foot stomp the accelerator and then all the wires got severed so the electric motor on the 'drive by wire' throttle body stayed partially open? ...Wierd! -I ended up converting from drive by wire to a throttle cable operated throttle body instead!

-Then 3 or 4 months of saving and researching and collecting parts for the swap..
I sent the harness and computer out to Jared at currentperformance.com his harness was plug and play when i got it back and my computer was reflashed with a performance tune, and for a cable throttle body.
Once i thought i had everything ready i yanked out my tpi motor and started bolting my clutch to the 6.0L only to find there was like 3/4" difference on stickout of the flywheel! :( IT looked like the easiest solution was going back to an automatic tranny, and using a special spacer they make for the 6.0L flexplate. After more research I found that Advance Adapters has a McCloid Flywheel just for adapting GenIII smallblocks to earlier muncie 4 speed trannys, its thicker and makes up the difference.. This was about $300 for the flywheel.. Then theres a bunch of just little stuff that nickle and dimes you.. All this stuff to get the motor going added up to over a grand.
There was a bunch of modifying and massaging things on the blazer to get this engine to fit in there and work. Every little thing was a small problem and hurdle to overcome.
Kevin helped me a Bunch by getting the exhaust hooked up to my old system, and fabing a new crossmember to meet the truck motor mounts, since the motor mounts are totally different on GenIII engines. A big thanks to kevin for the many late nights we spent cutting, drilling, mocking up, cutting, grinding, welding, and mocking up some more..

So all said and done i'm Over $2K into this.
Making my '72 K5 6 Liter Beater almost new like a 2004 2500HD.. Priceless.

Yo Ryan….hell of a job dude. That thing is just plain sick!!! I can’t wait to hear that thing roaring up trails and crawling over rocks. So…when’s the inaugural run??

On a side note…I would’ve never thought an isuzu box truck would be powered by an LS1!!! That’s good info for future reference.

Now..the million dollar question is…..what junkyard did you find this in?

Heh, I am jealous you started and finished your GenIII swap before I even started mine. I have had the bulk of the expensive stuff laying around for over a year collecting dust waiting for the itch to start ripping stuff apart. I am not special tho, I decided on an LM7 (5.3)for my power plant. I still want a chance in hell at 15 MPG. I am still on the fence about using a 4L60E or a 4L80E(have both staring at me stupid sittin in the garage...)

On a side note, are you guys now taking orders on Gen III swaps now that you have all of the bugs figured out?? :D
