Just thought id share a cure for what felt like axle wrap on my truck.

Condition: Upon accel from a stop, you would feel a clunk in the rear. Getting worse and worse as time went on. On several occasions i along with others tried to see what was moving, clunking, shifting,..... and causing this feeling.

One of my more experienced mechanics heard me bitching about it the other day, and said........."that sounds just like what my '89 C1500 used to do."

Cause: Dry yoke at front of rear driveline.

( This seems odd to me since the yoke is constantly wet with tranny fluid )

Cure: Remove rear driveshaft, slap in a wad of red wheel bearing grease (inside the yoke on the splines) and reinstall.

This all might be common knowledge to the rest of you, but it sure surprised me, and it fixed my clunk. Maybe it will be of use to others. :thumb:

That is usually the sign of a worn out slip yoke. The grease is a bandaid, time for a new yoke.

I hear ya Scott, thats why i took it apart, and i guess it very well could be worn, but looking at it you would never know. All the ridges/splines looked good. Straight with crisp edges. ??? Guess i'll see how long the grease lasts.

The splines should not have sharp edges. They are flat on the tops kinda like this, /`\ if yours look like this then it is bad, /\

Is yours still a slip yoke?
or is this the slip in the driveshaft?
If it's a fixed yoke the driveshaft should have grease in it and should be check ed often, if it's slip yoke then you need a new yoke.

My dad has the same problem in his 01-02 1500. I told him awhile ago that it was prob the slip yoke. He said it looked fine, if I can get him to try this and it works then Ill tell him that he needs to replace it.
