So luck would have it. My neighbor has a trailer that's been sitting for 2 years in the back of his property with a old hot tub sitting on it. I can have it if I junk the old hot tub @ the dumps.

My question is how can a find out what the axles are rated at?

Also it has rails that stand about 6" around the sides..could I cut them off and widen the floor itself? I need to get to it to take some measurements.

I have to do a little diggin to get to it,but shit I'm stoked!!

Most of the times the weight rating might be stamped on the axles or on the trailer tag.. :2thumbs:
Get a pic

it depends on the type of trailer if it is a c chanel frame then u might be ok to cut the sides off if it's angle iron they use the side as part of the frame to get the strength post pics

Got to cut down the christmas tree, and then going to a BBQ. Plus is supposed to rain like a MoFo on Sunday.

A trailer is rated at its weakest link. If it has a 5k tounge and its on two 10K axles, it is a 5K trailer. If the trailer weighs 1.5K, you can "legally" haul up to 3.5K on it. Check the load rating of your tires. I think that might give you an idea of what this thing could haul. If the axle has 5 or 6 lug wheels on it, chances are very good they are 3.5k, or possibly 5.2/6K. Measure the dust cap and call a place that sells trailer parts, ask for some bearing buddies, give them the size, they will tell you what rating the axles are. Trailer tires fail typically around 10 years old, so I would invest in a new set of tires, even if they still have good tread on them. Look for the DOT date code stamped into the sidewall.

It has a wood deck still on ,and it's in great shape. The only thing missing is the ramps. Look's like there is a 1/2" groove that the OG ramps used to slide in and lock, but they are long gone. Any options?

It also look's a little narrow, but the length looks fine.

My buddys trailer which I have barrowed has two swing down arms which are like the front trailer jack and they stop the rear of the trailer from bowing down, you can just drive right on up no ramps needed.

Just my thought less to mess with, just swing them down and drive up. Then swing up and drive off in your nice a/c tow rig.

Like Dis!!!

That way the trailer won't want to pop a wheelie when you drive onto it with no ramps.

If it's 5 lug it's most likely only a 7k trailer since the axles are 3500lbs each. Thats what jaysyaks is and after seeing it bend all over the place in moab it may not be the best idea... No offence jay :p

E- for the price, its a deal that can't be beat.

Beef up the structural rigidity of the frame, get a newer style hitch and add axle truss's to it.

Pull it till it breaks, then get newer axles.

just my 2 cents.

Walk away Eric….not worth the time or money to upgrade it to what you’ll want or need.

Besides….the trailer that’s carrying a +/-6000lb rig that’s got a lot of $$$$ and time in it, down the highway at +/-60mph isn’t where I want to skimp and try and save money. You skimp there and it could wind up killing someone. Is it really worth it?

Well it look's like I'm gonna pass on it. It needs tires, rebuild of all brakes, and wheel bearings. Plus all the wiring was chewed up..

And the owner wants to hang on to it now... LOL! He's a character!

He's gonna let me borrow his welder though. :2thumbs:

Driving though the back roads look's like every other house has a trailer, just have to wait for the right one to pop up for sale.

Thanks for the help

Did you ever find out what the weigt rating is? There are 5 and 6 lug axles that have a 5.2K rating.
