Are springers on the outs now? What's the hot setup these days?

4 links :p

Yes springers still suck, as they did when they were first made.

52's in the front with 63's in the back with a shackle flip seem to be all the rage.

Seems simple enough. Is there a specific truck - year/weight rating/anything that the 52s and 63s should come off of? I have my 6" superlift springs in the rear of my truck now, I was thinking that maybe I could remove some leaves from those and use them up front, then get 63s for the rear.

I would think a 6" 52 would be rather large and stiff... Just grab some 52's out of the back of a 1/2 ton and grab some 63's out of the back of an 88+ half ton and you should be set.

Yeah, I figured I'd try my lift springs to see what they acted like with only a few leaves in them, but probably not worth the trouble. I think my stepdad has the original springs from his '89 and they were only in there for a couple of years, I'll see if I can steal them...

on the 63s try to get the 5 leafs, the 3 leafs are just too soft.

stock 52/63 springs will give you about a 4 inch lift with a shackle flip in the rear. You can add another inch or so a few different ways. For me, I have a 6 inch shackle in the back, and a custom drop mount on the front mount of the front spring. The rear shackles are really 2 inch drop shackles for the same body style 2wd truck. This is how much truck is setup if you watch the tday video you get an idea of how it flexs.

Cool, thanks Mike!

Jay, that sounds pretty good, I'm at about 6" front and 7" rear right now but that's with a tall spring perch and a 2" block in the rear. I have some long shackles that Mike gave me a few years back, I'm sure I can mix and match all of that stuff and get a good stance. As the for the front, I have a 1" 0 rate in there now and can mess with shackle lengths and dropping the front spring mount. I want to move it forward a bit anyways so dropping it shouldn't be an issue.

The last time I did a buildup I had alot more money than I do now, this time I'm going to do it on the cheap and concentrate on all the crap that I didn't do last time that made me feel like my suspension had stepped out of a 1993 edition of Four Wheeler.

I had to add 6 degree shims to correct this pinion angle. Got them from WFO, dont run the alum ones.

I had to move the rear shackle mount back about 7 inches. I did that because I wanted to extend my wheelbase. You will prob have to move both to keep wheel centered.

I wouldn't mind moving the rear axle back either so Iwill likely do that too. I'll be using a front spring mount for the rear mount like you did as well.

Why does everyone move the shackle mount point forward on the front?

IIRC the shackle can fold the wrong way...but not sure on that..
I am just putting the 63's in the rear and going from the 6" TC and zero rates to 4 "ers and trimming as needed..

Jay, after installing the 6 degree shims, how did you relieve the stress on the bolt heads on the bolts that thread directly into the housing of the 60?

I didnt. I know in talking with Kevin that he made his plates at that angle to fix the issue. So far it hasnt been an issue. So far.

Have you guy's tried 54's. They came off the rear of a 77 CCab 2wd. I've got them under the front of a 98 GMC. You might be able to run them using the shackle hanger in the stock location.
