I added the powermaster high output alt and was surfing around and found this from an old post from CK5 back in the day..

The only bad thing that i have found is the charging circuit. Painless runs everything through one 50 amp maxi fuse. This is ok till you add a winch or powermaster alternator. I was blowing fuse left and right. I added a extra line from the back of the alt. to the + side of the battery and this fixed the problem with no bad effects to the painless harness.

Is this true and will it hurt anything to the new alt..BTW I did toast a in line fuse after only a few min and the alt was very hot to the touch..and I went from a 3 wire to the 1 wire alt (140 amp)

I want to take this thing out..

and add something like this

Does that sound ok..

Do you have any issues with using something that will automatically reset itself? When I get around to properly wiring stuff up in my rigs, I like magnetic circuit breakers. If it pops, reset the switch, you are good to go. There are self resetting circuit breakers too, rated for whatever amperage you want.

I will find a link or two for some good products.

I agree with beavis….if you can run a resetable circuit breaker that’d be the way to go. That way you don’t have to carry (or buy) the big (and expensive) 40 or 50 amp fuses you want to run. Adding a fuse from the output of the alt to the + terminal on the battery won’t hurt anything. If fact, I remember the instructions on my powermaster alt actually stating that a fuse SHOULD be added from the output to the battery…..but I ignored it…didn’t need to.

yeah, fuses are stuupid, especially when you are trying to hot swap a battery... :p
