10" wide rim will let you run up to 39.5 well IMO. Tire size depends on how much trimming you are going to do. I run 39.5s with a 5" lift. Of course my sawzall is well used too.
4" back spacing is what I would run if I could, but I'm an idiot and bought crappy civ bead locks from USA 6x6 for 15inch rim size so I have 2.75" backspacing. Lame period.
A lot of guys here run H1 recentered beadlocks, what I should have got. :uh oh: Not sure on the backspacing for those.

17 wide  17x what? Now for crawlin' I'd say low lift, big tire and cut the body as needed.

YEAH 17 wide i had them custom made at stockon wheels used them for pismo but dunno about holdin up on the rocks. I trimmed the front like most trucks on here just so my 35s dont rub the back is still stock though.

SWEET! I'm lookin' for some stupid wide 8lug wheels for a set of 39.5 STS's which are good for nothing but the sand. They would'nt happen to be 16's would they?

Yeah 17" wide rims, not so great for rocks... Mine are 8.25" and I run 47's...
In general for rocks this list goes:
As little lift as possible
Tallest tire possible
Narrowest rim possible to help protect rim and bead
Most fullsizes that are actually doing alot of rocks are running under 5" of lift with at least 42" tires.

I'm running a 17x10 rim with bias ply 39.5"x13.5 IROK's on them. Been very happy with them. ONly other tire I'd even consider running is a TSL/SX.
As far as building your rig goes...I agree with what has been said so far. Biggest tire possible with smallest lift possible. I'm running my 39.5's with only a 4" lift.

2nd that, I am running 4" springs and a shackle flip and will be on 42's mounted to H1's now.

You don't need to trim the back for up to 37" tires, the front you might need it starting with the 35" tires depending on the lift.

I am lowering to a 4inch from 6 plus zero rates and am switching to 39's or so ..
You do not have to hack everything off but to keep it clean like, you can trim it like this in the back..I had to trim my wheelwells out because of rust (would do it anyway because it is the first thing to get hit on a rock)

Im still at a 5-6 inch lift with 38s. If I could find some 44s or 42s that would be sweet.
