....... and being stupid, but….do you think a truck like the one below could be used to haul a K5 on its bed? Assuming you add D rings and ramps of course.

I know its payload capacity should far exceed the weight of the K5. Other than that the only other concerns I’d have would be the width of the flat bed (pretty sure it’d be big enough) and the overall height of the truck once the K5 was on it. And yes…I’m sure I’d have to get a class “A” license…which isn’t a big deal.

What do you think??? Am I just being retarded again???

You would only need a class B with air brake endosement as long as the GVW IIRC isnt over 20,001
Been a while since I looked at the Regs..
I would be scared of the overall height with the K5 on there..
And unless that is a tilt bed you would need some DAM beefy ramps to get the K5 up there..
Not to mention the corners would be awfully scarey or any type of panic move because of idiot drivers
Doable YES ..
Worth it...NO :2thumbs:

Plus you would need swampers on it :flipoff2:

I know I’d probably never do this but just thinking about it. I could sell my gas hog of a DD/tow rig, get something more economical and then just use the flat bed when I need to tow the K5.

I’d store it the same place I’d store my trailer…at a storage yard for trailers and RV’s (there’s one RIGHT next to my work…pretty convenient).

As far as it working I imagine it’d work just fine….it’s essentially the same truck and chassis that a lot of flat bed tow trucks are. Ramps would have to be stout...I agree. Cornering as long is it’s tied down well…I don’t think would be too big of an issue.

They auction these type of rigs off all the time at construction auctions so I bet I could pick one up for fairly cheap (under $10K)…that coupled with selling my gas guzzling rig and getting something more economical might make some financial sense.

But…like I said…I’m most likely just dreaming here……

and as far as the hieght thing.....couldnt you get smaller tires? Like lower profile?

jays68yak

you could also dove tail the rear of the bed so that it wasnt such a climb to get it up there.

for the flatbed or the K5?

And Eric....

yes...swampers would look killer on the flatbed...but only if you're paying for them!!

You difinatly would need a winch on it.. If you ever broke down and needed to get it back on there.. But maybe put a set of 29's on there so it isn't so high.??

Yeah...a winch would be a necessity...I agree.

Dovetailing.....yes...good idea...might not be too difficult. THis one is actually a 22' bed so it might work well on it.

There's a construction auction the 10th of December in Vallejo...I'm halfway tempted to go to it and check it out. I'd like to see how much something like this goes for to see if it truly is feasible. If they want like $18k for one of them...yeah...I'm out. But...if I could get one for less than $10K.....it might make sense.

Also...regarding that auction...my salesmant that I deal with from United Rentals told me to check those auctions out. I guess United rentals and Hertz rentals, etc. sell their older equipment at these auctions. He knows I’m looking for a trailer and told me to check ‘em out because a lot of the times the equipment they get rid of is still in very good shape. I’ve already looked at the items for the 12/10 auction…there aren’t any trailers but a lot of other stuff.

Here’s their website:

yep...can see 'em...that's a bummer.

However....it just goes to show that you can use a flatbed like this to tow your rig with.

So.....anyone down to check out that auction on the 10th with me? I'll drive...starts at 8:30am.

You'd need a winch on the flatbed?.. To load a broken k5 that already has a winch on the front of it?
Um.. ok.

As long as you use chain and not straps.

Triple AAA towed my buddy's Scout back from FR on a truck about that high, one of the flat beds. I must say it looked scary as hell going down the freeway at 70mph, but supposedly it wasn't that bad. If it were me I'd prefer a trailer, but some tow rig is better than none.

You should have Kert (cybrfire) get a picture of his buddys Kenworth. He took an older, mid 90's OTR truck and added a flatbed with dove tail. Install a fridge, microwave and a few other things and got it licenced as a RV. I think he bought the truck for around 6k.

It would be much more stable than the flatbed in the picture. :) Just a thought.

I just need to say that with the taller tires that thing has your COG will be much higher and very unstable in a crosswind or turn..
Now with that said..
Yes a flatbed tow truck is a better choice over this one because..1. the tires are a much lower profile tire but still tippy fealing but more stable then that higher flatbed..
You will crap your shorts the first time the rig moves side to side and you all of a sudden have the steering wheel going the opisite (s/p) of your hands on the wheel :2thumbs:

That truck frame is essentially the same as the flat bed tow trucks except for the deck is different. Tweaker had his big truck on one of those and the height was fine. Don't ask why the tow was needed!

na, go ahead and ask. we were at carnagie and it was 38's on IFS vs. boulder same height as the 38's i made it over the top and snap. from tie-rod gave out. so postioned it to get towed and called AAA. thats why they wont go inside the park anymore for lifted trucks. on our way out we got a rock stuck between the duals and had to use a jack handle to break it out. those guys had no idea what they were in for that day. leaning tower of diesel.
