General Information
When: August 22-25, 2007
Where: Rubicon Trail
Camping Information
Well, it's camping. Your on a trail that is 20+ miles long and you will camp where we stop. August should not be too cold, last time it was September and way cold at night, ask Kevin. So, just in case, bring tent heaters :) .
Typically we will drive in to the Soup Kitchen and camp there, then on to Buck Island and camp. Then drive out of buck to rubicon springs and then back to buck to camp again. Then out through Soup and then to the dam. So count on 5 days and 4 nights with absolutely no facilities. Bring places to poo too, no pooing in the woods unless you want to be filmed and posted on pbb while doing it ;) .

Directions
If you want to look up your directions, go here:
Click me for google maps (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=6498+Pony+Express+Trail,+Pollock+Pines,+CA+95726 )
That is directions to the safeway in Pollock Pines. We will meet there in the parking lot at a predetermined time and once everyone shows we will head out to the trail. Time to be determined later.
FYI: Anyone heading up 99 to the 50, take the Grant Line Rd. exit and take that NE and contine on White Rock Rd. and it takes you to 50. Knocks an easy hour off of the drive, much faster.
From the Safeway we will head East on 50 until we get to the Ice House Rd./Crystal Basin exit. We will take that and head up Ice House for approx. 28 miles and then make a right onto Loon Lake Rd. We will follow this for 4 miles across 2 dams and end up at the Spillway where we will leave the tow rigs for those of us that have them and get read to head out. From there it's all trail.
Scenery doesn't get any better guys.

I believe we met at 11am last time correct? That worked really well for Ken and I. Earlier is fine for me as well, I could always start the night before and sleep somewhere and then head on up if you want to get an earlier start.

God dammit. I would love to, and I could get the time off to go easy, but I don't think my truck is up to it reliability-wise. I'm not about to inflict a possibily unreliable rig on the group, so I'll skip it. I'll be there in spirit.

Oh come on, if you got all your bolts tight and your crossmembers fully welded you will be fine. The con isn't that difficult nowadays, just take the bypasses.

Put me down as a maybe. I'm doing everything I can to be ready. My work schedule is conflicting but I will try to make things work. The first 3 weeks in August are open for me but the fourth week things get busy again. Atleast I'll have plenty of time to get my F Four ready.
As far as being too cold. GET A BETTER SLEEPING BAG! I was fine back in Sep 04 sleeping in nothing but my bag. The fresh air won't hurt you.
How do you spell relief?

By the way you know that most of the trail has been flattened out right?
It's not the chalenge it used to be. :pimp2:
It's never really been a challenge, for me it's about the scenery and the relaxation. I love the isolation and quietness with the occasionaly hard bonus line.
Hell I made it through the entire thing with a completely ripped out rear suspension :p

I'm not even planning on going all the way to the springs. I want to just stay back at Buck Island Lake and fish/relax.

So how are you planning on 3 days? Drive all the way to buck the 1st day, drive to the springs, the 2nd day and back to buck, then all the way back out on the 3rd day? Thats going to be loooooooong days.
I was hoping for a tuesday through saturday or weds. through sunday trip myself :uh oh:

04-25-2007, 12:22 AM
I guess I should revise myself.
The trail can easily be done in 3 days. Wheel in to buck, camp, wheel out of buck to rubicon springs, wheel back to buck, camp, then out to the tow rigs.
But, the problem lies in time. We won't realisticly get to the spillway before 1-2pm if we meet at 11 like last time. We won't get there till 10 or 11 if we meet at 9. So, that doesn't leave a ton of daylight to get to buck which is a long ass ways down the trail.
We could do a wheel in to soup, camp, wheel to buck, camp, wheel out of buck to the springs and back and camp, then back out to the tow rigs and not stop for fun spots on the way out. But theres alot of little optional stuff that some of us would like to play on on the way in.
jays68yak
04-25-2007, 12:28 AM
I say we plan to just go and whatever happens happens. Who says we have to stop wheeling once its dark? That dude that fell out of his truck was night wheeling at night. I wanna do some of that. Night wheel that is. Id like to not fall out of my truck if possible.
crewcabroller
04-25-2007, 12:39 AM
I'm down to night wheel, just don't break cause I aint down with fixin at night :p But you know me, I'll jump right in.
I'd really like to go past buck this time to rubicon springs and hit up the bridge again. It's a photo spot.

Would 5 gallons of extra fuel be sufficient? Is someone that's going going to have an air compressor that's good enough to fill my tires?

Im with Geoff though, how much extra fuel is enough? He and I both have 26 gallon tanks, obviously consumption rate on mine is a little bit higher Id think, but still comparable. Anybody have an estimate on what they've used on a similiar Rubicon trip so we have a clue?

Hmm, up at 2, drive 6 hours to get to safeway at 8, drive 1-2 more hours and get to spillway, drive 6 hours into the trail... Gonna have to buy some crack.
As far as the fuel, were driving the same distance no matter what, doesn't matter if we take 3 days or 4 days, fuel should be the same...
But, for you guys that are actually driving to the trail, bring extra fuel. It's a good 40 miles from the trail head to a gas station. So your talking 10 miles of highway, 30 miles of steep mountain grades, 50-60 miles of trail, then 30 miles of downhill grades, then 10 more miles of highway before you ever see a gas station.
Bring fuel.

I’ve got a CO2 tank as well. So at this point I wouldn’t be concerned abut onboard air.
The fuel concern is about the only issue I see so far with running propane….my dilemma is a little more complicated than you folks. I’ve got two large tanks (I think 12 gallon…but maybe 10) and one small one (I think 10 gallon…but maybe 8), but by that time I should have another large tank. But, hopefully Darren is going to come because I think he’s got like 6 tanks now so between the two of us we should be ok. I might have to bring one extra just for this trip though….if I run out of fuel there is no “siphoning” to get me more.
As far as onboard welders go, I don’t have one…yet. Been eyeing one for the past couple years though. I’ll have to see how $$$ goes, but I may have it by the trip. Maybe it’ll be my B-day present to myself.
I’m taking the 21st off as well so I can get ready for this trip so whatever time we need to meet on the 22nd is fine by me. I personally would like to get back home that Saturday so I can have Sunday to clean up, unpack and chill before going back to work on Monday. I’m with Burt…the earlier we can meet on the 22nd the better. Oh…and that’s a big 10-4 on night wheeling….FINALLY give me a chance to use all the fancy rock lights I have. :2thumbs:

Rich, you can ride with me...that is, if these Nor Cal guys let me go! :D Count me in for this one...love to do the Con again. If you guys decide on a meeting time, please keep me posted. I think I may travel up from Orange County to Fresno the night before and crash at my cousin's house if it's gonna be early...that would cut about 5 hours off my trip. Last time, we drove the whole thing all in one day, and it was brutal...
I'm not much for night wheeling, I kind of like sitting around the campfire and relaxing, but I'll go with the flow. I like the idea of stretching it out over as many days as we can also, as it shouldn't be a race... :thumb:

Rich,
I was planning on using the Stupid Duty to tow with, and was thinking about buying a new trailer...I think your poor tires are just not heavy duty enough to haul my heavy pig? I know I blew one out last time coming back from Rubicon, and we both know how many I have gone through in the past year or two! :( But if we could figure out something to get those tires to last longer, that would be nice! And if you have the urge to use the Dodge, I wouldn't say no...I'll just help you with the fuel and whatever else. Otherwise the Stupid Duty is mine to use (make use of my payments!)...still under miles on the lease.
Let's talk about it...I'm up for whatever. I'd like to bring my float tube this time and catch those damn trout I couldn't get to at Buck Island last time!

We'll talk some more Kieth.
I tried swimming to Buck Island last time we were there. It was too damn cold. I'm bringing my wetsuit, snorkeling gear, and spear gun this time. I may even bring a SCUBA tank. Then I can pick my dinner for the evening. If I have room I'll bring my RC boat, but it's not pulling any of you.

I dont know exactly how much fuel I carry in my smashed 31 gallon tank but I can drive from Camino where we leave the tow rigs,up the 50 to Icehouse, all the way up Icehouse to the the trailhead (either Gatekeeper or Wentworth),spend four days on the trail, and come out on the other side and drive into Tahoe on one tank.
I always bring 5 gallons of extra fuel but I have never needed it :toothless:

That sucks Rich! Well, remember last time we did it in late September, and it snowed the day before...I would imagine that on a normal snow year, October would be last month without re-creating a Donner party trip? :D
You thinking of going at a different time?

I know we’re planning on the 22nd being the first day on the trail. Then it sounds like most people are heading home on the 25th.
As far as where we’re meeting at….I know there’ll be a sizeable caravan going up there from the bay area and I think we were going to meet up with everyone else in Placerville at some grocery store. Anyone else….does that sound right?
While we’re talking about questions…..I’ve got one….what’s the plan for camping? Where are we going to camp each night. I’ve got some friends coming in Friday night and I need to let them know where we’re at.
Where are you caravaning from?

We'll be coming from So Cal (Orange County). We should have a decent group caravanning up. It's just that it's about a 12 hour drive, so we were hoping to maybe split it up...we also talked about possibly getting there a day early and relaxing first.
I believe we're meeting at the Safeway in Pollock Pines again...good meeting spot, worked for us last time.

Yeah...that's a long drive especially towing. When we drove to Moab last october I know I reached my limit of drive time towing at about 10-11 hours. After that my mind became mush and I started seeing the care bears run across the road. To drive 12 hours AND then wheel the rest of the day....not much fun there.
I'm taking the 21st off to get ready for the trip and load up and do misc. shit (also to get drunk that night...to start celebrating my 30th bday on the 22nd)...If I had my shit done I might be down to meet you guys up at the con or around it the that evening (the 21st).

Hell I made it through the entire thing with a completely ripped out rear suspension :p
with a few stops of course :p
But, for you guys that are actually driving to the trail, bring extra fuel. It's a good 40 miles from the trail head to a gas station. So your talking 10 miles of highway, 30 miles of steep mountain grades, 50-60 miles of trail, then 30 miles of downhill grades, then 10 more miles of highway before you ever see a gas station.
AFAIK there is gas at the ice house store, but its been a while.
if there is, its silly expinsive.
I am so jealous, i wish i could go :(

So I’ve got a couple questions here:
1.What’s the deal with fires? Are we allowed to have them? Do we have to get a permit? Are there restrictions on them? What about firewood?
2.How about BBQ’s…can we have them or are we stuck using propane stoves?
3.Who is confirmed as going as of right now? Maybe Jason can make an updated sticky/post for those of us that are still going as a register list….rather than hunting through this damn post to find out who’s a “yes” vs “no”.
4.What’s the scoop with the caravan? I’ll be ready to leave Pleasant Hill EARLY Wednesday morning so I’m down for whatever that day.

Ok, that sounds decent.
You guys could meet me at the strip mall parking lot right off 680 at the Monument exit. It’s right down the road from my house and it’s RIGHT off the freeway. Could meet up and then just slam right back on the freeway. If you’re leaving your place at 5:15am towing…you should be up my way around 7:30-8am???? Either way that will work.
I don’t even know who else up my way, or who in general, is even going. I imagine you, Yakker and RB will be caravanning up together?

This time of the year they bad fires, you will need to bring a propane stove for any kind of heat or cooking.
You will see the signs as you're driving up there.

Yeah, no campfires allowed...or charcoal fired bbqs. You must have a permit and use propane gas stoves/bbqs. Only one permit is technically needed for a group, but they're easy to get and free, so might as well have one for yourself. When we went in 2004, they had fire restrictions, but it snowed the day before we went and was damn cold, so we "may" have had something resembling a campfire that one night, just to try to get warm  ...but with as dry as it's been, we just can't risk it. BIG fines...and way dangerous.
Yeah, an updated list of who's going would be nice...I believe most of us So Cal-ers will be coming up Tuesday and camping out at Loon or thereabouts...we'll meet the rest of the group Wednesday at Loon, unless we get real antsy and drive in to Soup Kitchen and set up camp! ha,ha

That’s pretty much what I thought. Guess I’ll be stocking up on the little green cans of propane then and I’ll plan on bringing plenty of warm clothes (and some “painless”) just in case it gets a little cold at night.
I’m going to start another post right now and we can use that as a “who is attending” list until something better gets put together.

Yes, the Kohls lot...that's the one. And No....I wouldn't recomend for Jerry to park his truck there. But...I happen to live about 1 mile from there and he could leave his truck at my place. Or, we meet him further up towards his way somewhere.
