Only I put my question in the appropriate forum :flipoff2:

Now that I got a garage and stuff, I thought it's about time for me to start looking around for a replacement engine for my truck.

It's a 77 so it has to stay boring and smog legal and all that. Been thinking about buying a GM crate, but not sure where to get one.

Any recommendations? :)

If I was gonna go crate eingine I would get the most you can afford...atleast one step above the stock or cheepest one...get a long block and yoiu can swap on the 'stuff' from your old engine.

The old smog law use to say you can olny replace the engine with what it came with so not sure if a smogable LS1 would work???

I think I paid 12-Hun for the Stock 350 crate in my truck. I picked it up at Fitspatric in Concord. But that didn't include intake, harmonic Bal, and a few other goodies.

I would do like Burt said and buy just a little above the base price. If I where to do it over I would have gone with the GM 383. But thats just me. To top it all off, you get a 3yr, 50K mile warranty with it. It was the first time I have ever had a warranty on anything I own.

:uh oh:
Your 77' should be easy to pass smog with a new Motor< :D
No catalitic converter to screw up.
transfer all the smog stuff on the motor, < :D
to your new long block.
buy a new HEI, around 100bucks if yours is old.
nothing worse than keeping the same old problems from your old Parts
going on a new mill. <like the one that makes you change motors< :D :chaz:

 that's a great way to christin that new garage floor, have fun Lady!!

This is the one I'm currently looking at. The purpose is to get the thing running and dependable...

http://www.sdpc2000.com/catalog/120/products/228960/290HP-350-Long-Block-Pre-Emissions-GM-Crate-Engine.htm

Even though it says pre-emissions it also says for 79 or earlier. I called SD and the guy said that once everything was hooked up the smog guy wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

not sure what freight will cost you but I paid 2k out the door for the replacment motor in my 94. Crown in dublin had like 20 of them in stock. Might try your local dealer or crown and see what they have in stock. Might be a bit more but then your not paying for the freight. I go something like a 3 year 30000 mile warranty good at any gm dealer. and jobber on any parts I needed to install it.

Good point. Freight would be about $255... so pretty close to $2K delivered to my house.

Would be worth it not to have to deal with that dickhead at the parts dept. at the local stealership.

Anyone wanna call Greenwood Chevrolet in Hollister and get a price for me?

I just placed an order with:
gmpartsdirect.com

I checked your motor and it is about $100 cheaper thru them. I have never used gmpartsdirect before but a neighbor swares by them. The way they make their money is to charge high shipping and handling prices. In the end they are still way cheaper than the local stealer.

They start by cutting the stealer price in half then add the high S&H.

There is no "800" number but they do answer questions on email and there is a good FAQ section on there site.

****What do you think I should charge DuneRunner to store the K5 at my house after he gets married?***********

Whatever you do, don't base your engine purchase on price alone. There is usually a reason why the price is cheaper. I would recommend that you call the Chevy deealer (F H Dailey-510-351-5800)in San Leandro since they are the distributor for the west coast dealer engines. They have some pretty good pricing and a warranty to go along with it. :thumb:

School me... what's the reason? Seems like the price for the engine is pretty much the same all the away around (give or take a few bucks), but shipping ends up being the deal killer. Since Summit is located in Nevada... only $115 delivered to my door. If everyone is selling new GM crate engines that come with the same warranty... how bad could it be?

Who handles the warranty claims for GM crate motors? Do you have to deal with the place you bought it from, or from GM directly?

If $$$ is an issue, why not find a good used motor??? I know they sometimes you get a dud, but if you buy one from a reputable seller, you can often times get a nice motor for a song.

Not that anyone cares but.... The way current smog laws are written... You can in fact swap in any later motor as long as its in the same class (light duty truck, etc etc) You also have to transfer every piece of emissions equipment from the donor vehilce. So if you wanted a 502 from an '05, that is possible provided the motor has all of the emissions junk from that newer rig. You can go younger, but you cant go older. Youd also need to get your setup inspected by a ref and get a fancy schmancy thingie put on your firewall for the smog guys to scan.

I don't think you can buy a GM crate engine any place other than a GM dealer. The places like Summit, Jegs, SDPC all sell crate engines that are built buy different places such as Bill Mitchell Racing and the like.

Man, you guys sure know how to suck the fun out of purchasing a new engine :uh oh:

I don't want a used motor... I already have one of those :flipoff2: Not sure about the warranty. I guess I'll have to find out all about it when I buy the engine.

Scott, the places I have looked are selling "genuine" GM Parts. Maybe they are lying? I called the Chevy dealer in Gilroy yesterday and the price for a 260HP is the same as I can order online for the 290HP and I'd still have to find a way to get it home...

IIRC the warranty is through GM so you can go to any DEALER if you have an issue with the motor. Just hope its not due to your install.

Friday the 6th of Jan I could help ya out. Id have to drop the rig at HH then come back into town but we could use the bed of my truck. Or even the trailer.

Thanks for the offer, but I doubt I'll have my funds together that soon. I'll keep it in mind tho :2thumbs:
