Ok so after this weekend I think either way a rebuild for my th400 is in order. I was just looking on ebay at parts. looking for some feedback as to weather these are good deals and good kits. Ryan??

Not looking to go too extreme. Just want something that will get me out on the trail and not have too much down time. Also that it will hold up for some time.

Jason, do a search on here, i checked for someone on here about a rebuild price for a TH400. I can't remember who wanted the price but somewhere around here you will find it. It was really recent that i replied to the post.

Im planning on rebuilding it myself. I know a shop to rebuild should be around 600-700. I just want to know if those are good prices for a kit and if they are good items.

All that looks like it will work. My 400 overhaul kit was $125, shift kit $35 or so.
Stock converter is good. otherwise you'll be revving and creating heat while crawling.
The rebuild kit looks like it'll do the job, i only see 2 bronze bushings in the kit, in the B&M master overhaul kit i got a bunch of bushings and i think after careful inspection i maybe replaced one and i still have the rest of em.
The "high performance" clutches in the B&M kit said Raybestos right on em.
I've only done a transgo shift kit in a 4l60e and the directions were so-so, in a few steps the pictures and explanations weren't too clear. I've installed B&M shift kits in 350's & 400's and the directions were good. I like the TCI reverse manual valve body i eventually put in my th400.. but it doesnt have engine brakeing in 1st or 2nd gear... so for 4wheeling you'd want to go with like an art carr manual vavle body that keeps the compression brakeing in all gears.
Another trick you can do is stuff an additional clutch&steel in the clutch drum for more torque handling and a firmer shift. Measureing your clutch drum clearance with a feeler gauge, then measuring the thickness of each clutch/steel..
If you search on the internet, you could order a thick/thin clutch/steel for your th400.. doing some math you can figure out if you can cram another clutch and steel in there, by figuring out a combo of thick and thins.
I didn't bother when i was doing mine, and its held up to a lot of abuse behind the big block in my car.
You might also need to get some thrust washers, there were 4 in my th350 that won't come with the overhaul kit. I stopped by a local tranny shop with the 4 i needed and he gave me new ones for $10.
The front and rear thrust washers will affect the input/output shaft endplay, and come in different thicknesses.. Its important to measure shaft endplay with a dial indicator before teardown then it should be pretty close after rebuild, and within spec.
Like i told ya, I have an ATSG th400 manual i can loan you for a while, maybe even give ya a hand one day.

Just another piece of info. Clutch drums from a caddy 400 will hold more clutches than any other 400.

On that note a Caddy case if it weren't a different bellhousing pattern is stronger than any th400 case. different metal.

What about upgrading the sprag? I see on ebay that you can get a 34 element sprag for around $50. But dont you also have to change the drum on newer trannies (69-up)?
