So who is comming to KOH to work ?Anyone else bringing their junk for support/chase duties?

If your are thinking about support/chase duties you should go through the rule book because there are a few things in there that pertain to that .

Now I know we aint gonna be like alot of the other teams (cuz we are "special" :) )but after reading this I got to thinking that some sort of plan should be in place. But maybe not quite on this scale .

From Pirate,

It's All About People
The more help you can get, the better. Ideally each person in your pit will have a specific task. Here are some tasks that each crew person can do in a typical desert race:
1) Pit Boss - When you pull into your pit, you will be greeted by the pit boss. Pull right up to him and stop. This person will stand in front of the vehicle the ENTIRE TIME the car is in an active pit with the engine running. The pit boss should have a headset and radio to enable safe, clear communication with the driver. Trust me when I say that this is the best way for the driver to communicate his needs to his pit crew. Your pit boss may not need a radio if your race car is extremely quiet and/or you're wearing an open face helmet, but it is still very nice to have.
http://www.pirate4x4.com/koh09/images/pit1.jpg
2) Fuel Crew - You should have three people to dispense fuel into the race truck. One person will be manning a large fire extinguisher and two people will be dumping fuel.
The fire extinguisher person is pretty self explanatory. The car is hot from running at full tilt, and your fuel dumpers have an 11 gallon bomb.Your fuel dumpers will work together to dump the fuel. One will hold the dump can (they are heavy and awkward) and the other person will hold the end of the dump can and make sure the filler hose is pouring into the race car with minimal spillage. The front person dumping the fuel into the car should be wearing a fire suit. Keep in mind a small splash of race fuel onto a hot brake rotor or exhaust can easily ignite. Your fuel team should definitely PRACTICE fueling your car before race day.
Ideally you should use race dump cans like the photo below. These are rapid fill 11 gallon cans and can fill your race car very quickly. These dump cans are the bare minimum for a competitive desert race team. Many of the bigger teams use fuel towers for even faster fills.

3) Repair Team - You should have at least one or two people who are very knowledgeable about your race car and how it's built so they can repair any items that might need repair when you come into your pit. They should have a full assortment of hand tools, air tools, a floor jack, welder, etc. all spread on a table and easily accessible.
4) The Check Everything Over Guy - You should have at least one person quickly looking over the entire race car checking for obvious issues (eg: missing/cracked u-joint cap, major oil leak, etc.) and then direct the repair team to fix.
5) Driver/Co-driver Assistant(s) - This person should give the driver and co-driver waters, a wet and dry towel to wipe off their goggles/visors, and possibly a snack. It's advisable to put flexible straws in the waters if the driver/co-driver are wearing full face helmets.
Everyone should know their jobs, and be aware of their surroundings. Do not get in the way of the other crew mates doing their specific duties. Be aware of the Pit Bosses orders, as he will have radio communication (clear, directed communication) with the driver and co-driver and be able to let everyone know of any specific issues.
The pit crew should be notified by the driver/co-driver about 10 minutes before the race car arrives at the pit that they are on their way, so that the Pit Crew can prepare for arrival. If you are having any issues with your car, you should let the pit crew know at that time, so they can plan their repair strategy and prepare any special tools and/or parts that might be needed for the repair.
Your pit should be well marked, and you should have a sign with your team number on it. You should also have someone flagging you into your pit. Your pit should have a piece of carpet, astro turf, or tarp to park on top of in case the Pit Crew has to climb under the race car.
Remember, the Pit Boss is exactly that - The Boss. The car does not move until the Pit Boss verifies that every pit member is clear of the vehicle, and it is safe for you to take off. SAFETY FIRST!!!
Remember, practice makes perfect. I encourage you to do practice pit stops with your team. In addition to practicing planned pit stops, you may also want to practice doing a tire change with your co-driver. A tire change should take NO LONGER than 3 minutes from the minute you unbuckle your seat belt to the second you jump back in the car. Fast desert teams can do it in under 2 minutes.
Now time for a little inspiration... Check out this video of Robby Gordon's trophy truck team doing a pit stop at the Baja 500. His crew dumps 70 gallons of fuel and changes both rear tires in less than 55 seconds (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wK20oerN9CY).

I’m planning on being on the lake bed Monday or Tuesday and will be there till Saturday mid day. I’m, of course, down to help on race day/night. To what capacity and exact responsibilities I’m open to discussion. I hadn’t planned on bringing the brown turd as I didn’t really see a need for it as I figured the use of my trailer to haul misc tools, supplies, firewood water, etc. would be of greater use. I’m not opposed to bringing the turd…but I’d like to understand what it’s purpose would be prior to hauling a 6500lb piece of “camp art” down to the lake bed:rolleyes:.

More or less I’m open to whatever. I’m going down first and foremost as a vacation with my family (yes, the wife and boy will be there with me) so above all, their comfort, safety, well being and happiness is priority #1. Secondly I’m going down to chill with great friends and help some buddies out and try and finish the race as best (and safely) as possible:patriotic:.

Maybe everyone that’s going to go down and help out with actual race day tasks/responsibilities need to get together and meet (in person) relatively soon so that everything can be planned, decided, discussed, agreed upon, etc. Just a thought.

I mentioned it today and they seemed fine with it. I'll be back in school by then so it'll only be 3 days from work and 2 from school. The school is fine, and like I said work seemed fine with it too.

Soooo, that being said I'm a go. :)

Im bringing my junk so I dont have to unload the camper and for just in case we need to get to a location where a tow rig cant. But your tow rig and trailer is a good idea too to get more stuff out to a pit location.

Im down for whatever it takes to get this done too. This sounds like quite the adventure :pimp4:

I wont be able to make an in person meeting on this unless we do it at the club meeting.Between the hollidays, the manditory club metting, and heading to Pac Fab at least one more time before the race,I have about two free days between now and the first week of Feb. to get to get things ready on my end :o

man I wish I could play with you all...sounds like a dream job "pit crew". When I was a boy our neighbor was a stock car racer at the local circle dirt track and we use to hang in the pits all wearing the same shirts. One of the coolest memorys as a boy.

All my time off for next year is already slotted for Hawaii, Moab & Pismo.
Have a great time ya'all and get some good pics!

Much like you, I would prefer not to unload the camper from the truck to use the tow rig. But, if need be I can. I hear you on wanting some transportation to get around the lake bed during the week. I'm asking around to see if any of my buddys have a side by side or gas powered golf cart that I could borrow. I really only want some transpo for lake bed use. Problem with bringing my trail rig is it only sits 2 people and doesn't have a lot of room to haul a bunch of stuff.

What weekend you coming back up to Pec Feb? Maybe we do that day? I hear you on being strapped for time. If I want to do any wheeling trip in Jan (to the hammers or anywhere) there's a bunch of shit I need to do to my rig. Let alone dialing in the camper and Dodge and working thru any issues I may have while towing with the camper (I haven't tried that yet and I'm not sure if an extended hitch or fabricated longer trailer tongue are in my future). Add into that work and family obligations...you get the point.

I could be 100% wrong with my assumption but I'm thinking it's more about having capable rigs there to chase/recover than it is about having plenty of seats or a way to cruise around the lake bed. As you said you can load up a bunch of people and cruise the bed with your tow rigs but if the SHTF somewhere besides the lake bed you'll probably be wanting your rig.
If my k10 was hammers approved I'd bring it. So for those of you that do have hammers approved rigs I'm sure they'd be helpful to have available.

A lot of my coolest memories from when I was young involve motor sports :pimp4:

Some of my earliest memories are from time spent with close friends of the family at a drag strip in OK. with their top sportsman 69 Camaro.I remember hangin out in the pits and not being tall enough to look inside.

Spent many a Friday night in the pits at Watsonville Speedway from the mid 70s to late 80s :banger:

And I spent a few years in the early 90s building cars and pitting for our demo derby team at a dealer I worked at in So. Cal. (KOH is kinda the same right :p)

I was going to try to make Moab this year with yall, but I think this may be my big trip of the year.

Im not sure exactly when Im going back.It all depends on Protools coming through with a die and me getting a part finished for Kevin :p

The only thing I will be doing detween now and Feb.is working, letting Morgan drive me crazy, and getting ready for this

Communication is another thing the support crew needs to address also.

The support crew could communicate among ourselves over short distances using regular CB,but the only way for Kevin and Kyle to talk to us is going to be via FM (HAM) radio.

Kevin brought up a good point last weekend that not only for the race but for our regular offroad adventures these can be a great safety tool.So if a couple of us invested in a couple radios it really wouldnt be a waist.

Range on a 50 watt unit is about 50 miles.I was on the Con in June, and guys at Rubicon Springs were talking to peeps at Loon.Thats kinda sweet :pimp4:

I'm having Kevin hook me up with a radio package...seeing as how you stole the first one he got for me. :tongue4::rolleyes:

So we should have at least 3 radios between us. I also am going to get a set of handheld short range "CB's" that we can use for communciation on the lake bed. Beyond that range I'm not sure how well they'll do. But for $40 it's not bad. They can also be used on the drive down in the tow rigs...or on the way to Moab...or to HH....or out drinking at the bars. ;)

I am looking at my calendar and seeing how much of that week I could get off. Would I be useful as a Fire extinguisher holder? :P I don't know Kevin's truck well enough to iagnose things well "wrench" wise, but I am not afraid of dirt, grease, etc. I also have a Powertank, a cordless Snap-On impact gun, and am a licensed HAM operator, if any of that helps?

I probably couldn't come down for the whole week, but I could likely be there thursday and Friday? Maybe also Wednesday.
