View Full Version : Thinkin about full hydro

I have some serious steering issues now that I moved the axle forward 3 inches. I actually wanted to go 4 but the steering wouldn't allow it and I wanted to keep my options open.

I've been looking into just converting my existing hydro assist into full time hydro by eliminating the steering box and drag link, and using a steering valve to control the ram.

Stuff I think I know, correct me if I'm wrong. My ram is a 2x6 chief tie rod ram. With this type of ram won't it turn quicker in one direction than the other? Meaning on the rod side of the piston?

I was looking at Suicide Sally from Poison Spyder and all they are using is a PSC ram similar to the design of the ones most of us use.

My rig is never going to see the street again, but I do still drive it fast off road and if the steering is sketchy that would be out. In the rocks & crawling who cares if it turns a little slower one direction. Trying to figure out all the caveats before I do it. Then there is the headache of figuring out which steering valve to get to make sure my truck doesn't turn like a forklift. 6/7 turns of the wheel lock to lock hehe 2/3 is more like it.

You would definately want a balanced (double ended or two single ended back to back) system. As you said you would have a different amount of turns lock to lock and you cannot run an unbalanced system with a load reaction orbital valve, it has to be a balanced ram. You can get good double ended 2.25-2.5" bore 1.5" shaft 8-10" travel rams at surplus center for around $150 or so. You will also need a good power steering cooler, resevoir, filter, and pump. If your going to piece the system together make sure you do all your calculations one which orbital valve you want before buying one.

Thanks for the info. I read that long ass thread on Pirate about it and it pretty much turned me off to the idea...for now. I'll wait till I have a 60 first anyways, no use building all the shit for my 10 bolt. I think I fixed my steering good enough yesterday to not be an issue for now.
