I ran bald mountain with Jared (basketcatch19) and a couple of our buddies New years eve. Nothing extreme but the weather  It was pretty cool ( my first time up there) The blue first gen had some bad luck with rear u-joints breaking (u-bolts loose allowed the pinion to rotate up) then he broke both stubs trying to get unstuck not knowing he was in front wheel drive. The blue first gen hit me after his carb puked on a climb. he came rolling down and couldnt get it stopped. No body got hurt and the damage was minimal. I don't know if jared got any pics. he is deployed for another week or so right now. Anyway here are mine.

Good times!! I love wheeling in that weather. Makes me wanna go for a snow run very soon!!! How was camping in it?

Cap’n and Jason….you guys need to clean out your mangina’s and sack up!!! :flipoff2: No doors/no top= no problem for snow wheeling. I’ve done it before and I’ll do it again. It’s not that bad…just dress warm with waterproof clothes and you’ll be fine.

Jared and the guy in the first gen were the only ones that camped up there. They had a stove and stuff in the tent so it didn't look too bad, but yeah outside was nasty for awhile. With a raincoat it wouldn't have been to bad cause it wasn't real cold just wet. I was glad I had a roof and doors though :2thumbs:

if I owned warm clothes I wouldnt be freezing my butt off at home. Its not so nice having a non working heater. Altho I would like to see how low the pg&e bill is this month.

We're renting too, thats why the stove comes with me when I leave. :D Bought a used Lopi Stove on CL a last year, man that thing rocks. 76 degrees in house last night. Moving sucks ass.

I still want to go do the Dusy Ershim trail. Gonna plan on that this summer sometime. Bald Mountain and the general area are pretty fun places to go camping in the summer too. Getting to be a lot of people up there though, and you run into some interesting folks too.

Yeah I am interested in going up there this summer as well. The trail had a few spots that I had to back up and try again, but it was snowy, and slick. I imagine in the summer it isn't a real difficult drive. Yeah I would like to try dusy as well, and I found red lake and coyote lake online they both say "moderate" 4x4 required to get to them, but they show a stock Amigo or something in the pics, but still looks like a nice camping area :2thumbs:

Some random pics, looks like a fun place to go for a few days. I still haven't done Fordyce either. Deer Creek was fun except all the damn skeeters. Holy crap I've never seen so many big mosquitos in my life.

I’ve only been up near Shaver to ski in winter.
Heard that the Dinky creek area is a good wheeling area.
Your pic’s show that they're right. :2thumbs:

Hey Steve or Anyone else that wants to explore.
My favorite place up in that neck of the woods is Thomas Edison Lake.
In summer, this area is closed in winter except snowmobiles
Past Shaver Lake, past Huntington Lake, go up over Kaiser Pass.
I’ve seen snow 10 feet high at the top, a week before July 4th.
That’s where the mosquitos will eat you alive, if your not ready.
The 27 mile paved road takes around 2 hours to drop into Gods country.
Camper on pickup, no RV’s or long trailers, cus its One lane steep up and down.
the only paved road in CA. that I know that grannylow is the gear to use.
Shaver is the last Gas, I carry 10 gal. extra to stay over a week.
take the left turn to Mono Hot springs a small store there.
At the green bridge over the San Jouquin River.
If you turn around and go Back up the road ¼ mile,
Look for a turn out for one truck & 15’ wall of granite around it.
Look for where hot springs water crosses the road.
follow the water down hill, Walk down the granite stay to the right side. climb down about 200yards.
That’s where Little Eden hot pool is. Jump in naked! make mud faces on the walls.
Thomas Edison Lake is 5 miles past the hot springs bridge.
I turn left just after the Dam, down the dirt road follow the river down a mile. easy 4 wheel in the last mile camp by the river, no one there.
Free camping next to the river, it takes a big U turn and Fishing is real good there.
around the lake has both free and reserved Campsites with lake views that can be windy.
Vermilion cove has a small store, restaurant, boat rental, ferry boat to Muir wilderness trails.
In the Lake the Big Browns will surface in the morning & evening as the lake turns to glass.
If you cast a live June Bug or Cricket on the surfacing ring, the Brown will take it in his mouth.
Give him lots a line as he will run for a 100 feet before he eats it, then set the hook and hang on…
Garlic butter and a fry pan…hook’um & cook’um. :p

oh ya It is Bear country be prepared, get a fire permit.

good to hear i'm not the only person on here that knows the localm spot for the best dang hot spring at mono hot springs. have you been up there recently. they converted the springs into a whole resort thing and the river it more developed. as a kid i remember my first trout came out of the river just below the last camp site. just setup a tri-hook and let float down stream w/a bobber about 2 feet up the line. those were the good ol days. catchin water snakes. even walked down the hill a couple times to naked people in the spring like dogman said. i have pictures somewhere with me floating i there with my floaties. that was way back when my mom was still alive. before i turned 7 and she drowned inner-tubing. on a river around three rivers, ca.
