Got the passanger side fender on.
http://pnkages.com/gallery/d/5275-2/DSCN1986.JPG
Next was the rocker, I started by cutting off the rocker
http://pnkages.com/gallery/d/5267-2/DSCN1984.JPG
then cut the cab corner
http://pnkages.com/gallery/d/5271-2/DSCN1985.JPG
Then installed some 2x3 steel.
http://pnkages.com/gallery/d/5279-2/DSCN1987.JPG
Then I rebuilt the floor.
http://pnkages.com/gallery/d/5283-2/DSCN1988.JPG
This is where I ended for the day, got the rear part of the floor done. Just need to cut all the rusty parts out of the front and put new metal in.

Time for a bit of an update. Even tho its more of a step back since Im taking more apart. Anywho, got the th400 taken apart. If it goes together as easy as it came apart then I might have it back together tomorrow night.

Well I finally got the tranny back together last weekend. Today I was able to spend some time on the rig again. I got the 205 back together, all 32 spline outputs, 31 spline input. Got the 203 back together and the last 4 holes drilled and tapped so that I can use the 208/241 adapter from the 400.
Then I was able to get the 205 and 203 joined via a Jeds Machining doubler adapter.
http://pnkages.com/gallery/d/5628-2/DSCN2082.JPG
Then it all went on to the back of the th400.
http://pnkages.com/gallery/d/5632-2/DSCN2083.JPG
And after A LOT of wrestling and using 2 jacks it got bolted onto the back of the 454.
http://pnkages.com/gallery/d/5636-2/DSCN2084.JPG
It doesnt stick down too far using the old 241 xmember as a temp member. I plan on building one or two that mount to both adapters. But first I need to replace the motor mounts so that it all sits level.

gawd damn I didn't know it was this low!
It enjoys the lowest compound gear of all the common truck transmissions at 7.05:1 and as such it is a popular choice for those wanting a very low crawling gear. 465 is ONLY 6.55:1 :)

Get your ass in gear and git ‘er done!!! This isn’t over by a long shot…..
As the great and almighty “Bluto” (Jim Belushi :drunk: ) from Animal house once said….. “Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!” …….I think that this applies here too. :flipoff2:

Also, there are a lot of resources in this club….use them!!! That’s the killer thing about being in this club as opposed to being a “lone wheeler” who roams the earth looking for wheeling Zen…..kinda like that dude in “Kung Fu”. Here you got people to help you out.

1. add more fuild. After doing this I did gain forward movement, but I have to rev the crap out of it to move a few inches.
2. Try disconnecting the shifter and see if that makes a difference. Nope. Still wants to go forward in everything...but park.

I was going to put my 2¢ in and say add more ATF, but Sounds like you did that.

Any way... Hope the truck moves on its own soon.

Theres a lot in there and its reading high on the dip stick. The dip stick is out of the 88 suburban that I got the motor out of, it also had a th400 in it. So its the correct dipstick. I think there is something up with the vavle body and or a seal or two in the tranny.

Not up here, they would prob want $200 plus a $50 core. IF I could find a th400 4x4 tranny in the yard.
Why go throught that when I have a good working 2wd th400 in the back of my truck. I know this one worked cuz I drove the POS truck home 40 mins vrs grabing the trailer. The only thing is its been outside for the last 6-7 months. :uh oh: My plan is to swap the output shafts and toss it in and see what happens. Altho swapping outputs means I have to take the WHOLE tranny apart. Well I guess trannyS.
The more I think about it, I think its a bad pump. When it was going out I had to rev it a lot to go anywhere. Now I wasnt getting anything and I basicly overfill it and I get some pressure but still have to rev the crap out of it. That or it is one of the seals......

If it's going forward on every gear except the park, you have a locked up forward clutch.
The 400 has that problem.
I have one sitting in my garage now that was doing that in my waggy.
You need a new forward clutch setup.
I know now it's too late but if I had seen this before, I have a complete setup 465/205 32 spline with Hydro clutch, and pedals and all that I could sell you, and you can pay me when you can, in installments.
And if you have a 2wd th400, if it's a fixed yoke, you are in luck, just take off the tail housing and the yoke and you have a 4wd th400.
:2thumbs: They are the same except for a threaded hole at the end of the shaft for the bolt that holds the yoke.
Ryanb should have mentionned that.

Thanks for the input on the forward clutch. Ill swap that out along with the pump. Its out of the truck now and I just need to get some time to do it.

I've always wondered about this myself. My question to you is:
How do model "A" hotrodders and other open front wheel rodders get away with it. Granted….tapered rear’s are a completely different story. But fronts…..I think might be LEGAL.

actually i think it's older then the 50's...hmm, i'll have to go find my law book. But when i got my last fix-it ticket the officer said I had to get some flares for the front tires of my truck because they stick out...and remember it's not narrowed. she said you can't have a tire stick'n out even an inch. All tire tread needs to be covered, and mud flaps have to cover enough tire to cover the wheel hub (or 50%).

See by reading that I still think front tappers are legal. BUT the catch is how far your tires orginally stuck out from the body or didnt. See if you can follow me. Typically when a front is tappered it is done in a manor to keep the orginal width of the firewall and the body attached to the side of the firewall. So if your tires did not stick out past the fender before the tapper then they are not sticking out passed the firewall and its body work. This would still allow the rocker and what not to effectively minimize the spray or splash of water or mud to the rear of the vehicle. Now if you have wider tires then you would still need a flap to cover the rear of the tire. That paragraph does not meantion a single thing about the top or the front part of the tire.
So on to the back, as long as there is something to effectively minimize the spray or splash of water or mud to the rear of the vehicle you should be cool. (read mud flaps)

I see how it might be taken that the cab-or firewall width being behind the tires could effectively be considered a "mud flap" so to speak. I bet in the end it all comes down to the cop who pulls your huge wheeling machine over in the first place ya know. I'm going to have to side with ya and say it COULD be considered legal. The fact taht there is no fender flare still amkes me question it though.

OK I just got off the phone with one of my buddies. He says that IF the driver "deserves" a ticket they can get down to technicalities of 2 inches or one tread width of the top of the tire. He told me that technically the tread has to be covered top and rear to keep debris from the road to be thrown into the air by the tire. He also told me that unless the driver is an assholt to him he doesn't bother with it unless it is majorly uncovered like half the tire or better. He didn't quote e the section in the code book though.

The rear sits a bit lower then the front. Ill have to address that later. The hood isnt perfect, well none of the body work is but its a trail truck, so one side has a 1/2 gap. I think it has more to do with the hinges and how old they are. Now to put it all back together.

Last full day to work on the rig till BF for me. All I got done was the floor. :uh oh: Altho I dont have much left. Anyways I started out with a shelf from a work van. Cut it up a bit and made it all bolt in. Its in 2 main pieces with one smaller one in the passanger side so that I can get to the shifters. Which is a good thing since I need to revisit the shifters. The 1/4 all thread needs a beefing up. Yesterday I spent the whole day wiring the truck and getting everything working. I have tail lights, head lights, fan, line lock is hooked up but not sure its working.

1. I got the front crossmember/start of winch bumper fabbed up last night. Just need some bolts.DONE
2. Fixed the shifters so the allthread isnt flexing. As had to deal with a stripped stud on the 203 shifter thing. Said F it and just welded the bracket to it, too bad I did it backwards. Just means I need to lengthen the linkage for that rod, which can wait. DONE
3. Need to hook up power steering cooler.
4. Breather lines for the doubler and tranny
5. Need to redo rear dshaft so that I have a bit more compression out of it.
6. Fab up spare dshafts.
7. Radio
I think thats it.

naw the fan deffinetly kicks on every once in a while on the trail or in heavy traffic when it's hot, but why put it against the radiator when the radiator is usually running hotter then you want your tranny to run. Well its offical, it was the tranny cooler line. Went out and pulled the old cooler and lines, then installed what I had of the new stuff. Still need to more fittings that I should have by next weekend. Ill also be installing a second fan on the front since Nate was having so many issues. Once I had the old stuff off I started looking at it. This is what I found.

Yeah its moving. I got the remaining fittings last night. Tossed them on and took Mikey for a ride around the block. Tranny is making some kinda of not so grinding grinding noise, and its not shifting into 3rd. I think its a bit low since the bigger cooler has been added and the vaccuum line is cracked. I'll mess with it more this week and see whats up.
The next door neighbor came out and watched me drive up the tree. He kept telling me that I could make it higher. I was like not with out rolling it. I need to figure out why the rear isnt flexing all the great.

I need to figure out why the rear isnt flexing all the great.
You need more junk in the trunk!!! :pimp2: :pimp3:
Seriously, maybe with all the new body work you’ve done you don’t have enough weight on the back to load down the springs. Similar to Bare in the mog….that thing doesn’t even begin to flex until you get about 800-1000#’s in the back because the springs are so stiff. Also…..didn’t you weld a bunch of tubing to the frame in the back and front and then connect the tubing? You could have a case of “RB-itis”. Isn’t he having problems with limited flex now because he tied his cage and what not into the frame?
Regardless…..good to hear it’s running…kind of. Least your tranny is showing potential that it might come around and give you some love.
jays68yak
08-01-2006, 03:54 PM
Front is what is all tied in. The rear doesnt really have anything back there. I think part of it is weight but more then that its shocks and driveshaft that causing it. I dont think I have enough compression on the drivshaft. I want to swap out the front shocks for something with a shorter body so it doesnt bottom out like it is. I didnt realize that I had as much room as I do.
barbastard
08-01-2006, 04:06 PM
Pull the shocks and the suspected offending shaft and flex it out and see how it does then.
Then you should know pretty quickly what is limiting the travel. Plus….you can always pull a leaf or two out of the rear springs if need be. Also…gotta figure in that the rear is going to weigh more once you get a full fuel cell, the rest of the tube work/flatbed installed and all your gear back there.
CaptainInsano
08-01-2006, 04:36 PM
Dude I had the same problem on mine after hacking the rear off, I pulled the smallest (which is also the stiffest) leave out and it flexes way better now. Just remove the damn clamps from the springs or better extend em like I did on the rear of mine. I should hve done the front before BF too, wouldn't have that bent spring in the rear.

i made a set of 12" superlift springs flex like mad after doing the same. Also, grease teh srpings while you got them apart, doesnt' help flex but makes it ride a little bit nicer. Use the super heavy duty NASTY grease if you are going to do it.

I disagree with that.
My buddy Darren did that with the springs on his scout…..it may have helped it ride a little bit better but it was a monumental mess. After 1 trail run the springs looked like almond rocha….they collected so much dirt, grit, dust, branches, leaves etc. His springs looked like an organic matter magnet. It worked so well, they effectively camouflaged his springs  . He ended up installing new springs all around (not because of the grease problem) and did NOT grease them again.

I totally agree with you, that grease is nasty...BUT...that's why you have to spend the time to clean the shit off the side before you take them out. So the only grease is what's inbetween the springs. grease them, drive it around the block a few times and wipe them down with a rag then assault them with tons of brake cleaner till they look clean and no more mess. It does help a bit, i've done it to a few trucks and they all seem to notice a difference. Kinda like teflon pads but better cause it covers teh hole spring not just the end. You can also hit hte ends of your springs with the grinder and give them a tapered end so there is less resistance.

Ok fixed the vaccuum line and added another quart of fuild. Its still making a grinding sound in the tranny. Not sure what it is, but I think its internal. It did shift into 3rd gear. I cant tell if the tranny is popping out of gear when letting off the gas or if its the engine brake thanks to the doubler. I also need to redo the wiring to the fan. I guess it got a bit warm and shorted itself to another wire and it wouldnt turn off with the switch.

Well I took it out to carnegie for a bit today. I think I drove around for maybe 15 mins. Once the tranny warms up it starts slipping and wont shift into second. On the drive home I started thinking about rebuilding the th400 that I just got this week, then thought for the price I would pay to get it rebuilt I could swap in a 465 and not worry about the tranny anymore. This stupid tranny thing has kept me from wheeling all year. It blows. So it looks like I blew $250 on a tranny cooler and its lines to only use it basicly once for about 15 mins. I guess you live and learn. Time to save up and get a 465.
Anyone have a link to info or parts list for the hydro conversion? Im thinking I should swap to the 32 spline output at the same time. Then I dont need to change the 203 input and it will all be beef. I dont see me getting this done till the end of the year if that.
